The who, what, why of it all.

Mental health is not an elective. It impacts students during school, after hours, and now incessantly online. Regulating emotions, navigating interpersonal dynamics, building communication skills, mastering time management, and making responsible decisions are paramount to young people’s success. I have been working with and advocating for children and youth from diverse backgrounds for over ten years in diverse settings - in-home, Family Court, foster care, public schools, and private practice. Developing necessary social, emotional and behavioral skills in young people while supporting their overall growth is my mission, my passion, and my expertise.

Services

Individual Therapy

For children and youth

Therapy for children and teens addresses a range of behavioral, emotional, and relationship challenges, including ADHD, anxiety, depression, social skills difficulties, aggression, school-related issues, and adjustment to divorce or blended families. Therapy helps children gain emotional support, understand feelings, resolve conflicts, and explore new solutions to ongoing problems. Goals may include specific changes, like improved behavior or relationships, or broader improvements, such as reduced anxiety and enhanced self-esteem. Sessions are tailored to the child's developmental level and needs.

Parenting Therapy

For caregivers

Parenting comes with incredible rewards, but it can also bring unique challenges that test your emotional and mental well-being. Therapy offers a supportive space to navigate these difficulties, whether you’re dealing with depression, anxiety, relationship struggles, or the stress of life transitions like divorce, relocation, or job changes. It’s also a place to build skills like assertiveness, anger management, and coping with grief. By prioritizing your own well-being, you not only support yourself but also create a stronger foundation for your family to thrive.

Family Therapy

Family therapy, or family counseling, focuses on treating the family as a whole, involving parents, children, and other core members. The therapist works with the family to identify roles and patterns, assess problems like communication challenges, and develop strategies for improvement. Sessions provide a safe, private space for open communication, fostering understanding and connection. Therapists may assign tasks or "homework" to encourage progress between sessions. Family therapy can improve communication, rebuild trust, strengthen unity, address life transitions, and equip individuals and the family system as a whole with effective coping mechanisms.

Treatment Modalities

Psychodynamic Therapy

This therapy explores how unconscious thoughts and past experiences shape behavior and parenting, helping both children and parents understand and address emotional reactions and patterns.

Mentalization-Based Therapy (MBT)

This therapy helps parents and children understand their own and each other’s mental states, fostering empathy, sensitive parenting, and stronger relationships.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT equips individuals with skills to manage or prevent behavior issues by addressing thought patterns. It is an action-oriented and effective approach for issues like anxiety, depression, and conduct disorders.

My student clients

My therapist, Ms. Lavey, out of anyone made me feel like I mattered. She saved me from a hard place and made me feel like I’m not all alone or by myself.
